The Department of Photonic Materials has experience in the development of custom optical fibers from own-made glasses. The participants of the course will have the opportunity to attend the whole process of making such fiber, starting from synthesizing multicomponent glass, material postprocessing, building the fiber prefrom by stack and draw technique, and drawing the fiber. The course also includes the measurements of basic optical properties of the optical fibers and splicing microstructured and conventional step-index fibers.

  • Learn the basics of the development and synthesis of multicomponent glass for optical fiber fabrication.
  • Preparing glassy elements for preform building.
  • Experience the stacking microstructural fiber preform.
  • Drawing optical fiber.
  • Measurement of optical properties of fibers.
  • Splicing of optical fibers.
No experience Medium experience Advanced experience
The participants should have basic knowledge about optical fibers. However, the course is for everyone who would like to learn or extend the knowledge of multicomponent glass synthesis, optical fiber fabrication, optical measurements, and fiber splicing.
